Apprentice Program

The Apprentice Program is a school-year-long immersion into the world of museums and public history that empowers high school students (Grades 9-12) to become active consumers and producers of history through mentorship and project-based learning opportunities.

About the Program

Applicants are curious, creative, and have an interest in storytelling. Applicants must be current 9th through 12th graders enrolled at public, private, or homeschool programs in the Red Hills region. The Thomasville History Center accepts a maximum of 10 students per cohort. Students who have completed their first year can continue as Apprentices through their high school career. Apprentices may transition to independent work after Year 1 if they choose.

The Apprentice Program is a school-year-long introduction and immersion into the world of museums and public history. Apprentices will complete a Capstone Project (theoretical or physical) in the second semester in an area of museum work of their choice.

Apprentices meet at the Thomasville History Center and venture on excursions to local historic and cultural organizations to learn about their operations.

Apprentices meet for seminars on one weekday evening a month and for seminars and/or excursions on the third Saturday of the month. Suggested volunteer hours may be fulfilled on the student’s schedule during operating hours of the History Center or as remote digital projects.

The Thomasville History Center seeks to foster the curiosity of teen learners and help them on “their journey” relating to the history of the Red Hills region. The History Center helps Apprentices to develop and master transferable skills that will serve them in their future education, careers, and beyond.

The program is presented free of charge, and we do not expect parents/guardians or the Apprentices to incur costs in relation to this program. Should that situation arise, we will do our best to develop fundraising opportunities to ensure that all Apprentices may participate no matter their financial situation.
